Riddling
Flag a walk with gladness
and thatch the roof with song
Call the sunlight down to earth
and send the rain along
Swirl the wind in circles
till it’s dizzy for the day
and chase the funny flying things
that glitter when they play
Run to press the gravity
back into cobbled shape
Burst the air with dancing
and flounder in its wake
Pierce the sky with growing
Find out what’s behind the blue
Then keep the secret, knowing
that it’s funnier than you knew
Love is nonsense, truth is stranger
than the very strangest tale
But love and truth will triumph
even as they seem to fail
So it might be wiser, youngling
to forget the sense you’ve learned
and bound deep into the nonsense
that Creation shows the world.
I cannot promise mystery
will be an easy friend
But what God put here to puzzle us
Will save us in the end.
